Database-as-a-Service? Your Corporate Data in the Virtualized Data Center

Pawel Plaszczak, CEO, GridwiseTech, Poland & USA

Cloud-oriented data processing models are riding the new wave. However, while the Web industry experiments with MapReduce, Hadoop and NoSQL, the more conservative verticals continue to base their operations on relational databases and this is unlikely to change soon. Since RDBMS is not designed for on-demand operations, to what extent can corporate data centers reap the benefits of virtualization, consolidation and cloud?
Database vendors are determined to cloud-enable their stack. However, it is relatively easy to talk about this at the application level (SaaS). Moving a database into the cloud is another, far more profound challenge.
In this session we will discuss the challenges and opportunities of consolidating a data center that contains a typical business application stack including OracleDB, which owns 40 – 60% of this market.

  • technical challenges (i/O, bandwidth, scalability patterns)
  • political challenges (allowing coexistence with the dreaded open source, Oracle and non-Oracle in one pool of virtual resources)
  • organizational challenges (internal/external cloud)
  • financial challenges, including licensing: can the cloud really reduce data center TCO?

This talk will be based on real-world case studies, taken from the manufacturing and Web industry.
