HP 's approach to HPC in the cloud is one that we wholeheartedly support. While some vendors suggest that HPC applications can just run in the cloud, HP builds an HPC facility from its high-performance modular systems combined with products such as Adaptive Computing's Moab Adaptive HPC Suite in order to develop a private cloud solution targeting HPC users. Going one step further, the ultimate integration of its HPC Cloud with HP Cloud Service Automation will allow resources to be repurposed between commercial or technical workloads, without ignoring the specific requirements of HPC.
INTEL , with its Xeon processor family is the dominant supplier of processors to the HPC market today, and is preparing for the future with its Many Integrated Core family of high performance, low power consuming multicore processors. The company has supported many industry initiatives, such as the development and adoption of USB, Wi-Fi, PCI and InfiniBand. As the major supplier of many IT components, and in its role as the technical advisor to the Steering Committee of the cloud industry body the Open Data Center Alliance, Intel is in a unique position to drive the intersection of Cloud and HPC.
GOMPUTE is an HPC on demand service owned and operated by Gridcore AB, offering facilities in Sweden and the USA. It provides a range of pre-installed commercial and open source applications that can be accessed through the proprietary graphical user interface, or directly from Gompute. It also offers the Enterprise Gompute (E-Gompute) platform, a comprehensive environment for engineering, financial and technical solutions which need a simple and standard way to utilize the power of computing farms.
MELLANOX develops silicon and products to deliver end-to-end InfiniBand, 10Gig Ethernet and converged connectivity solutions, as well as services for servers and storage. Its ConnectX adapter cards run at up to 56GB/s, while its SwitchX-based Director Switches support up to 648 ports at the same data rate. It also provides a range of application acceleration software that improves the performance of streaming applications, MPI messaging and Tier 1 storage.
MICROSOFT 's technical computing platform comprises Visual Studio 2010 for parallel development, Windows HPC Server 2008 for HPC clusters, and Windows Azure for cloud computing. Its Technical Computing Group delivers both on-premises and cloud technology to scientific, engineering and financial modelers who rely on simulation and large-scale data exploration to gain insights. While its Technical Computing Initiative partners with leading researchers to solve some of the world’s biggest computational challenges.
SAMSUNG has developed industry leading process technology for producing low power DRAM and Flash memory, significantly reducing the energy consumption of HPC systems. Its 30 nm DDR3 memory uses less than 25% of the power of some alternative DDR3 options. Energy consumption is a major issue in IT, particularly for High Performance Computing and cloud facilities where a high end supercomputer or major cloud infrastructure may have more than 1 Petabyte of memory.
SGI has been a leading HPC systems vendor for many years, and augments this with its Cyclone - HPC in the clouds – offering. In collaboration with Nimbis Services SGI provides the hardware platform, supported by networks, storage, accelerators, system software and applications appropriate for HPC users, and delivers this in a cloud pay-as-you-go model. SGI’s Altix UV is the most scalable shared memory architecture available today, supporting 256 sockets in a shared memory model with an architectural limit of 32,768 sockets.
BULL is the leading European supplier of high end supercomputers. Ten of its systems are rated in the TOP500 list, including the fastest system in Europe. Bull has developed a range of clusters tuned for the needs of the HPC industry. Its HPC on-demand solution, the extreme factory, offers an integrated, pay-as-you-go capability for computer simulation that includes systems, application software and consulting services.
EUCALYPTUS is the world's most widely deployed software platform for private clouds. It uses existing infrastructure to create a scalable, secure web services layer that abstracts compute, network and storage to offer IaaS. Eucalyptus web services are designed for hybrid clouds using the industry standard Amazon Web Services (AWS) API. The benefits are highly efficient scalability, increased trust and control for IT as a Service.
FRAUNHOFER is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Its elasticLM license manager is a novel technology for creating and managing software licenses designed for distributed computing environments like Grids, Clouds or SOA. It has built a framework for cloud Service Level Agreements targeting IaaS, PaaS or SaaS, and is developing secure cloud technology to support text mining on clinical data.
PENGUIN COMPUTING provides a wide range of products and services for the HPC industry. It offers systems optimized for performance, density and energy efficiency, supported by Scyld ClusterWare, a sophisticated cluster management solution. Penguin on Demand, its HPC cloud service, provides a secure, on demand HPC service based on its own systems.
QLOGIC is a networking company that delivers adapters, switches, routers and ASICs for fibre channel, Ethernet, iSCSI, converged networks and, most importantly for the HPC market, Infiniband.
