Big data and HPC on-demand: Large-scale genome analysis on Helix Nebula – the Science Cloud
“Helix Nebula – the Science Cloud” is a pan-European cloud computing infrastructure currently being implemented by a consortium of leading IT providers and three of Europe’s biggest research centres (EMBL, CERN and ESA). As one of the first flagship projects on Helix Nebula, EMBL will implement a novel cloud service to simplify large-scale genome analysis and to help scientists inside and outside EMBL to better meet the challenges of analyzing large amounts of genomic sequence data by provisioning tailor-made high performance computing and bioinformatics resources on demand.
Rupert is responsible for the laboratory’s IT, including operations and development of a state-of-the-art high performance IT infrastructure and the provision of high quality IT solutions and services to EMBL’s internal and external user communities. Rupert joined EMBL in 2005 after seven years in leading IT positions at LION Bioscience, a global IT solutions provider for the pharma and biotech industry. As General Manager Professional Services Rupert assumed business responsibility for a novel collaboration software platform to support drug development in the pharma and biotech industry. Until 2003, as Director Global IT Systems he was in charge of LION’s corporate IT infrastructure, including the high-performance data centers and the integration of the company’s seven international sites. Prior to joining LION, he worked as an IT consultant for companies such as Lufthansa Systems. Rupert holds a degree in Biology and a PhD in Bioinformatics, both from the University of Düsseldorf.
