CFD in the Cloud – Recent Activity with STAR-CCM+

The company has a 30-year expertise in delivering industrial strength engineering simulation to a wide range of industries, and application areas. STAR-CCM+ provides the world's most comprehensive engineering physics simulation inside a single integrated package. STAR-CCM+ provides an engineering process for solving problems involving flow (of fluids and solids), heat transfer and stress. In the last 5 years, the typical model size has grown from around 1 million to 10 million cells. Today, model sizes of over 100 million cells are becoming more common as engineers require increased realism and at the same time observe a phenomenon not even thinkable some years ago. As a consequence, the demand for hardware is growing at an equal rate. Typical hardware requirements are high bandwidth for interconnects, fast global parallel file systems, high bandwidth between the cluster and user, a mix of thin and fat memory nodes and a mix of nodes with and without graphics cards. Some of the cloud solutions which have started to appear in the last years seem to facilitate this and hence offer a remote solution with no requirement for system purchase and administration. This presentation will look at how some of the features of STAR-CCM+ are perfectly suited to facilitate the cloud offering we now see. It will also discuss development and activities since the presentation at ISC'12.
