Leveraging the Cloud for Digital Manufacturing: Progress & Challenges

Frank Baetke & Jean-Luc Assor, Hewlett-Packard

More recently smaller and medium-sized companies have started to use cloud-based HPC-resources to accommodate varying load scenarios by off-loading local resources, and as an alternative to local HPC environments. In this scenario cloud computing infrastructures need to address HPC application-specific challenges to remain competitive in terms of price-performance, availability and security.

We will discuss how advanced cloud computing environments are overcoming these challenges and evolve to be a viable computing environment in a new segment dubbed “Digital Manufacturing”. We will cover the relevant base technologies and explain recent reference architectures that will accomplish the objective to provide innovative resources for enhanced technical and scientific computing not only for ultra-large simulations but also for smaller and medium-sized businesses with a special focus on the manufacturing industry.
