Prof. Dr. Matthias Rarey

Managing Director of the Center for Bioinformatics, University of Hamburg, Germany

Prof. Dr. Matthias Rarey is the managing director of the Center for Bioinformatics at the University of Hamburg, Germany and heads the Research Group for Computational Molecular Design. His background is in Computer Science (M.Sc. Paderborn, 1992, Ph.D. Bonn, 1996) with a focus on Bio- and Cheminformatics. Until Juli 2002, he was group leader for Cheminformatics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI, former part of GMD). Prof. Rarey is co-founder of the cheminformatics company BioSolveIT GmbH located in Sankt Augustin. His major research interests are the development of new algorithms for problems occuring in molecular design. In 1997 and 2000, Prof. Rarey performed research in the cheminformatics departments of SmithKline Beecham (King of Prussia, PA) and Roche Bioscience (Palo Alto, CA). Since 1993 he has developed the molecular docking software package FlexX which belongs to the most widely used codes for virtual screening and has been centrally involved in several other well-known innovative software tools for structure-based as well as ligand-based molecular design.

Prof. Rarey received the Science Award of North Rhein-Westphalia (NRW-Wissenschaftspreis) 2002 awarded by the "Wissenschaftszentrum NRW" and the "Industrie-Club Düsseldorf" in 2002 as well as the Corwin Hansch Award of the QSAR and Modelling Society in 2005.
