| Abstract: |
|
While it is broadly accepted that optical interconnects will play a significant role in Exascale systems, there is less certainty about the detailed technology choices. Within HP labs a number of different approaches are being pursued from extensions of current VCSEL technology through to integrated silicon photonics. It is possible to view optical interconnects as simply “better wires” with minimal impact on the system user. However to fully exploit the capabilities of these emerging technologies we need to reconsider systems architecture to make use of unique capabilities such as broadband switching and distance independence. The combination of new device technologies and innovative system architectures will be critical in delivering viable Exascale systems. |
