Exascale computing to be successful will have to devise new strategies for addressing the challenges of efficiency, scalability, power, resilience, and programmability even as it exploits new technology opportunities in processing, storage, and communications. The flat-lining of processor core clock rate and instruction level parallelism demand effective usage of a billion-way parallelism at the core level to achieve exascale application processing but at a power efficiency on the order of a hundred times better than today’s high end systems. Yet programming systems of such greater complexity will have to become even simpler than today’s methods if a broad range of applications is to be supported to achieve breakthrough science and engineering goals. This brief introduction to the ISC 2012 session on “Exascale Computing: Where Are We” will present the challenges facing the world of Exascale and the essential accomplishments critical to its ultimate success. |
