As all of you might know the K computer, Japan obtained the fastest supercomputer, a 10PF machine, last year. The machine will be provided to both academia and industries from this September. Along with the K computer, supercomputers installed at universities and laboratories form HPCI (innovative High Performance Computing
Infrastructure) where the users easily access those nation wide computational facilities. HPCI promotes not only computational science communities but also computer science communities.
After intensive discussions about the next national flagship supercomputer in HPCI with computational and computer scientists last year, it is concluded that such a machine should be designed in collaboration with both scientists to solve respective key socio-scientific problems in Japan. In this summer, a two-year program, called feasibility study on the next HPCI system, will start to study on building the next supercomputer that has a cable of solving such problems by 2020. |
