I review pioneering codesign activities spanning Edinburgh University, Columbia University and IBM taking place over the last decade. QCDOC was a special purpose system on a chip support built on IBM's 0.18um ASIC design flow to support Quantum Chromodynamics. Over 30 Tflop/s were installed and used with great scientific success by US, UK and Japanese researchers.
More recently our codesign activity has involved a collaboration with IBM Research on the design of the BlueGene/Q compute chip, with Edinburgh University and Columbia University performing VHDL design of the Level 1 prefetch engine, while ensuring performant behaviour using QCD computational kernels. |
