Distinguished Speakers at ISC'13
Dear Reader,
The ISC’13 Conference and Exhibition is just about two months away and we hope you are planning to join us in Leipzig.
Last year, for the very first time we hosted the Student Cluster Competition (SCC), with five dedicated teams consisting of young people from China, the US and Germany participating in this spirited and friendly competition. Check it out here.
What was particularly surprising at last year’s inaugural competition was the level of enthusiasm it garnered – the financial support from the sponsoring companies and the daily media coverage was quite extraordinary. Two Chinese national news agencies had flown in camera crews to film the competition, which was aired during prime time.
This year, nine teams consisting of young men and women from the Purdue University, EPCC, The University of Edinburgh, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University of Colorado, Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC), South Africa, Costa Rica Institute of Technology, Chemnitz University of Technology and two teams from China (yet to be decided) will participate in the SCC at ISC’13.
Here we would like to commend China and South Africa’s efforts in organizing regional and national-level competitions respectively to choose their best teams for ISC’13 SCC. Ten teams in Asia are now battling neck and neck in a similar competition for the title and prize money. The top two Chinese teams will fly to Leipzig as that nation’s representatives.
All this wouldn’t be possible without the help of the HPC Advisory Council for their efforts in making this global competition a success. Without their support it wouldn’t be feasible to stage HPC centers with modest resources on par with supercomputing nations, nor would so many young people have the chance to attend a HPC conference for a week. So big thanks to all involved!
Stay informed – be there at ISC’13 from June 16 to 20 in Leipzig.

NEW – Research Pass
This year we have added a new “research pass” to our passport range. The full research pass (Monday through Thursday) allows access to our Conference Keynote, research paper and poster sessions, BoF sessions, the opening party and farewell lunch, the exhibition and more. Please check here for the full program.
Public transportation within Leipzig (zone 110) is also included in this passport. If you’re planning to visit the event just for a day, it will only cost you as little as 150 Euro*. Remember to register by May 15 for 25 percent savings.
Last call for HPC in Asia posters: Deadline May 4!

The HPC in Asia Session poster presentations invites posters in the following topic categories, but are not limited to them:
-
- Applications: any fields of science and engineering computing led by Asian research groups with local HPC resources
- Systems: research on system hardware/architecture/software led by Asian research groups
- Performance: system performance analysis related to Asian HPC systems
The deadline for poster abstracts is May 4. If you are interested, please click here for submission guidelines.
Register by May 15 and save 25 percent
There are just about two months left until the conference kicks off on June 16, and even less time to plan your trip and stay at ISC’13. If you register now, you’ll save up to 25 percent off the onsite registration fee.
Leipzig will be at its tourism peak in mid-June, so, don’t wait until the last minute to book your stay!
ISC’13 Exhibition to break record
Just four more booths left!
At this year’s exhibition, over 26 new organizations will be exhibiting along with repeat customers from the industry and research. We expect a total of 160 exhibitors to showcase their services and solutions, on a far bigger show floor than the past years. Check out the floor plan.
Attention all exhibitors!!
Lead retrieval order deadline: June 15, 2013
To help you manage the traffic at your booth efficiently, ISC’13 has introduced a vastly improved lead retrieval system, based on smartphone apps for iPhone and Android, to help you easily scan badges of your visitors. You can either use your own smartphone or rent one from us. Please order the lead retrieval via the exhibitor login.
Future Challenges of Large-Scale Computing
Now in its 28th year, ISC’13 presents Bill Dally, chief scientist at NVIDIA and senior vice president of NVIDIA Research, on Monday, June 17. His opening keynote is titled "Future Challenges of Large-Scale Computing."
Dally was recently featured in a Q&A article by our media sponsor, HPCwire.
We have also lined up the following keynotes for the other conference days.
- Tuesday Keynote: Moore’s Law 2020
- Wednesday Keynote: HPC Achievement & Impact 2013
- Thursday Keynote: Fooling the Masses with Performance Results: Old Classics & Some New

With Roadrunner's Retirement, Petascale Enters Middle Age
Michael Feldman, a senior analyst at Intersect Research recently shared his views on the decommissioning of IBM's Roadrunner, the world's first petaflop supercomputer, in a blog published on the TOP500 site. Roadrunner was installed at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory five years ago in 2008. Its recent retirement represents the approximate mid-point between the first petaflop system and the first exaflop one. Visit the webpage to continue reading.
