Dr. Nicola Varini

Supercomputer Specialist, iVEC

Varini's role focuses on engaging the Australian scientific community to enable computational science on iVEC supercomputing facilities, and to help researchers to grow their applications to the Petascale level. Varini has working with research communities, to improve their workflow, in area such as molecular dynamics and computational fluid dynamics. Varini joined iVEC in May 2012, having previously worked for 2.5 years at CiNECA (Italy) and ICHEC(Ireland). During his time at CINECA and ICHEC, Varini worked on a number of high-profile international projects, including Petascale parallelisation of Quantum-ESPRESSO as part of PRACE project, and (also in PRACE) assisting scientist to apply for allocations on Tier-0 machines. His academic background is in computational physic: he has a MSc and a Ph.D. in Computational Physics from the University of Udine, Italy. Varini has published a number of articles on prestigious journals on petascale parallelisation and friction at the atomic scale.
