Dr. Ted H. Szymanski

McMaster University

Ted H. Szymanski completed a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He has held faculty positions at Columbia University in New York and McGill University in Montreal.  From 1993 to 2003, he led the "Optical Architectures" group in a Canadian national research program on Photonic Systems, which demonstrated a free-space "intelligent optical backplane" using photonic integrated circuits. International participants included researchers at Nortel Networks (now Ericsson), Newbridge Networks (now Alcatel), Lucent Technologies, Lockheed-Martin/Sanders, McGill University, McMaster University, the University of Toronto and Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland). Photonic devices were fabricated by the US Consortium on Optical and Optoelectronic Technologies in Computing. He holds several patents on optical architectures and error control resulting from the research program. From 2001-2011, he held the Bell Canada Chair in Data Communications at McMaster University. His current interests include improved energy-efficiency and resource utilization for Cloud services and Cloud computing.
