Dr. Derek Groen

Post-Doctoral Researcher, Centre for Computational Science, University College London

Derek Groen is a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Computational Science, a Fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute and an Associate Fellow of 2020 Science. Derek finished his PhD at the University of Amsterdam in November 2010, where he ran large cosmological simulations geographically distributed across up to four supercomputers. He currently specializes in multiscale simulations, high performance and distributed computing, working especially in the areas of cerebrovascular bloodflow and clay-polymer nanocomposites. Derek developed the MPWide communication library and the FabMD toolkit, and collaborates in the development of MUSCLE, a toolkit designed to provide structured code coupling, based on a formalized multiscale modelling framework. He also worked with a wide range of high-performance applications, including methods such as lattice-Boltzmann, stellar and cosmological N-body and molecular dynamics.
