Abstract:   Session describes the current approaches to liquid cooling for HPC and high-utilization data centers and helps attendees understand the practicality and serviceability issues of deploying liquid cooling in new and/or existing data centers. Emphasis is placed on the practical, hybrid approach of directly cooling with hot water (Direct-to-Chip) the server components that generate the most heat within a server. This affordable, minimally disruptive approach decreases energy consumption, increases data center compute density and enables server energy reuse, resulting in improved PUE, WUE, and ERE and significant TCO benefits.
It includes a case study of a of hot water data center Direct-to-Chip liquid cooling implementation at the University of Tromso in Norway where waste heat from the HPC cluster provides energy for use in campus heating, reducing power costs and GHG emissions.
