|Abstract:||This BOF will address two main subtopics.
We propose to discuss the requirements for energy efficient systems to be considered when writing procurement documents. The Energy Efficient HPC Working Group (EE HPC WG) will present power and energy measurement capabilities for systems, platforms, cabinets/racks, nodes and components. These capabilities are the precursor for better energy/power profiling, benchmarking and modeling power/energy.
The EE HPC WG has also developed a methodology for measuring power and energy while running a workload for benchmarking efforts. The testing has been done so far only with HPL, the session will outreach to a broader variety of workloads.
An accurate method of correlating application execution to the observed energy consumption is imperative to empower developers. Therefore, the second part of the BOF will be devoted to a discussion about the tools and techniques available to software developers to profile, understand and optimise the energy efficiency of the code running at scale. We will discuss the need for a set of energy and power-related standard hardware counters and APIs, and tools to collect this information to be exploited by the developer.
