|Abstract:||Factors that have long been considered givens are becoming unconstrained in large part as a result of the current and projected high operating and capital costs of power and energy required for HPC and especially supercomputing. This panel will explore two examples of breaking such paradigms; these are “center location” and “commodity processors”.
Center Location: High performance computing and supercomputing centers have historically been co-located with the scientists and engineers that use the systems. The centers are considered places of great significance and beauty to be toured as if they were art museums. The locations are “fixed” and different centers compete for government funding to site the next supercomputer at their center. This is changing; Tate Cantrell, CTO Verne Global and Wolfgang Burke, HPC Solution Build & Operation Manager BMW will explore why BMW moved their HPC applications to Iceland.
Commodity Processors: Historically, supercomputer system integrators build larger and more powerful systems by increasing the number of conventional general-purpose microprocessors that are similar to those used in personal computers. David Donofrio, Future Technologies Group at LBNL, will present a radical alternative that takes many technologies and techniques from the cost and power sensitive design requirements found in the embedded world that requires less electricity to operate and is cost-competitive with current approaches. We are embarking upon a new era for commodity HPC where the chip, rather than the circuit board, acts as a "silicon motherboard" that interconnects commodity intellectual property circuit building blocks to create a complete integrated system on a chip (SoC).
